The Aashiqui 2 full movie is set in Chandigarh, which is the capital city of the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana. The story begins with a flashback, showing Jai (Aditya Roy Kapur) telling his niece Tina about why he left his hometown after his parents' death. In 2008 Mumbai, Jai meets Meera (Namrata Shirodkar) for an interview for a job position. He impresses her with his knowledge of Hindi poetry and English literature. They both fall in love with each other but after an unknown incident they break up. This becomes a turning point in their lives as they try to find solace in their own respective ways. Meanwhile, Jai's younger sister Tina (Shreya Saran) is working at a music store with her best friend Aarti (Soni Razdan), who was earlier Jai's classmate. They both are trying to convince Jai to return to Chandigarh. However, he refuses as he is trying to finish his Ph.D. He receives an offer for a job in London, so he decides to take it and leaves for London with Aarti and his family. In London, Tina successfully gets a job as classical singer at the Strand Theatre where she meets an old friend of hers named Jimmy (Amit Sadh). Their wanderlust takes them to a remote beach in Thailand, where they spend a few days together, developing a strong bond. Back in Chandigarh, Meera is working as a lecturer in the same college where she and Jai had studied. She meets with an accident and is hospitalised for three months. After she returns from the hospital, her father (Arif Zakaria) wants her to get married soon to get his daughter married before he dies. She tells him that she has met someone whom she intends to marry and asks him to invite him home for dinner. However, she tells no one about her encounter with Jai. Tina arrives in Chandigarh to be with Jai. Meera gives him a surprise visit at his house, hoping that the two might reunite. After meeting her father for dinner, he invites Jai home for dinner too. However, when they arrive to his house along with Meera's friends, they are told that he has to leave for Paris on an urgent assignment because of which he cannot meet them. The next day Tina meets him in the airport and gets him to return home by promising to make him fall in love with her again after she falls in love with someone else. Tina then leaves for London after bidding farewell to her father. She starts working at the same theater where she met Jimmy, who is now an aspiring rockstar with his band, having released an album. Jimmy proposes to her and she happily agrees to marry him. Meanwhile, Jai returns to Chandigarh for Tina's marriage only to find that she has left for London.
